How to Start Reading the Bible

Updated: Jul 21

Don’t know where to begin with the Bible? You’re not alone. I created a gentle guide to help you take your first step with confidence.

When you hold the Bible in your hands for the first time, it can feel overwhelming — like stepping into a vast and sacred library filled with stories, poetry, commands, promises, and deep spiritual truths. But friend, you’re not alone on this journey. If you're wondering, "Where do I even begin?" — this post is for you.

Whether you’ve just received your first Bible or are returning after some time away, here’s a simple and welcoming path to get started.

ree

 1. Start with a Bible Translation That’s Easy to Understand

Some translations are written in older English, while others are clearer for daily reading. Here are a few I recommend for beginners:

  • New Living Translation (NLT) – Easy to read and faithful to the meaning.

  • English Standard Version (ESV) – A bit more formal, yet accurate and beautiful.

  • New International Version (NIV) – Clear and widely used.

💡Tip: Choose a Bible with helpful features like study notes, a reading plan, or a concordance to help you understand unfamiliar words.

2. Begin with the Gospels — Especially the Book of John

The Gospel of John is a beautiful introduction to Jesus — His life, His heart, and His purpose. It's deeply personal and reveals who He is as Savior and Friend.

Other great places to start:

  • Luke (a gentle and detailed account of Jesus’ life)

  • Psalms (prayers for every emotion)

  • Proverbs (daily wisdom for life)

3. Make it Personal: Invite God into Your Reading

Before you begin reading, take a moment to pray:

“Lord, open my heart to understand Your Word. Speak to me through these pages. Help me grow closer to You. Amen.”

Reading the Bible isn’t about rushing through chapters — it’s about relationship. God longs to speak to you through His Word.

4. Take It Slow: Read a Little at a Time

You don’t have to read the Bible in a year — you just need to start. Even one verse a day can water your soul.

Try this simple pattern:

  • Read one chapter or a few verses

  • Write down what stood out to you

  • Reflect on how it applies to your life

  • Pray about it

That’s it. Simple. Beautiful. Life-changing.

5. Use a Bible Study Method

If you like structure, try one of these beginner-friendly study methods:

  • SOAP (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer)

  • Topical (topic study)

  • Verse Mapping (Break down a single verse to explore its depth)

6. Keep a Journal to Track What God is Showing You

Write down verses, thoughts, questions, and prayers. Your Bible reading will become a treasure trove of your faith journey. Looking back, you’ll see how God has been gently guiding you all along.

7. Be Consistent, Not Perfect

You might miss a day. Or three. That’s okay. Come back with an open heart. The Bible is not a rulebook — it’s a love letter. And every time you open it, you’re opening your heart to God's presence.

Final Encouragement

Dear friend, your desire to start reading the Bible is already a response to God's invitation. He’s drawing you close. Don’t worry about doing it perfectly — just show up, and He will meet you there.

You don’t have to figure it all out in one day. Just start with Jesus. Start with one verse. Start with a prayer. But start.
